Building on Wetlands – Not a Green City Planning Idea

The City of White Bear Lake City Council should give serious consideration to restoring and protecting for future generations the wetland where the city may tear down the old public works building (if it builds a new one). The area would make a nice little park and continue to provide a home to lots of wildlife that live there such as waterfowl, deer, non-game birds, etc. The city said the land is too soggy to rebuild on anyway, so why build houses there? I’d hate to see public land taxpayers purchased sold private when we have so little public open space in the city as it is. Also, this nation continues to lose wetlands at an unacceptable rate. Wetlands not only are very rich in plant and animal life, but they filter contaminants from rain runoff before reaching our lakes and ground water, they recharge ground water (where the city gets its drinking water) and they enhance our over-built neighborhoods.
